Nineteenth Century “Base Ball” Comes To Pennsauken

Play Ball! This August, Pennsauken Township will be the host of some old time “base ball.”baseballOn Saturday, Aug. 8, the Flemington Neshanock Base Ball Club will put on a 19th Century base ball exhibition against a team of vintage base ball “all stars.” The match begins at 11:00 a.m. the Walt Nicgorski Sports Complex, located Powell and Collins avenues in Pennsauken. The Flemington Neshanock Base Ball Club plays by 19th Century rules, uses authentic replicas of 19th Century equipment and wears 19th Century uniforms. As was the custom in the mid-19th Century, all fielders play barehanded – no gloves are worn.

“Think of us as something like Civil War re-enactors, except we use a bat and ball instead of rifles and bayonets,” says Brad “Brooklyn” Shaw, president and founder of the Neshanock. This exhibition is a fun and entertaining way to inform the general public on the roots of our National Pastime.
