New Business Checklist

Zoning Ordinances: Zoning ordinances should be checked to ensure the proposed business location is appropriately zoned for the business being considered.

For home based businesses, inquires should be made to the Zoning office to determine if a business is permitted in the Residential Zone or if a permit is required.

Fictitious Name Certificate: Any business that intends to use a name other than its legal or corporate name is required to file for a Fictitious Name Certificate.

A visit to the County Clerk's office is necessary to determine the availability of a particular fictitious name. The Fictitious Name application form must be notarized prior to submitting the original and two copies to the County Clerk's office for certification and issuance.

New Business Registration: All new businesses are required to register with the Township of Pennsauken. It is requested that you visit the Building Department to apply for a Certificate of Occupancy as well as any required Permits and/or inspections. It may also be necessary to visit the Planning & Zoning office to receive a determination of approval to locate your business in the correct Zone and comply with any appropriate Ordinances.

A new business may also be required to obtain additional permits from Health, Police or Fire Departments. Please inquire with the Building Department when applying for the Certificate of Occupancy.

Depending on the structure of the business: Corporation, Partnership, Sole Proprietor, etc. you will be required to contact the State of New Jersey, Secretary of State and/or the IRS for an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Liquor License: To obtain a liquor license, first acquire an application (www.state.nj.us/lps/abc/licensing.html) from the Pennsauken Township Clerk's office. The application will be submitted to the State of New Jersey for review. Upon approval by the State the application is reviewed by the Township Committee and if approved a Resolution is introduced.
