Nature Walk A new boardwalk leading out to "Fish House Cove" was opened in Spring of 2005. Parking is available in the Tippin's Pond parking lot. From there head over the railroad tracks on Cove Road to the entrance of the Nature Walk at Fish House Cove. The 400-foot boardwalk winds through the marshland makes a couple of bends, and ends up at a deck over the Delaware River which is actually a 20 feet by 20 feet observation platform overlooking the infamous Fish House Cove that once was home to a settlement of Lenni Lenape Indians. Workers installed four-foot by six-foot foundation posts that are typical of deck construction, although it's made from a new plastic material. There are handrails on both sides and a couple of areas where it's ramped for handicapped accessibility. From the observation deck you will be awestruck by the broad expanse of the Delaware. You can see the Philadelphia skyline in the background along with a wonderful view of the Delaware River. If you sit there long enough you can see varied wild life such as turtles, hawks, owls, foxes, deer and fish. The area is believed to have been originally labeled Pea Shore. Some say they're one and the same - Pea Shore and Fish House Cove. There's been much discussion on that subject and it seems to still be a mystery. What is known about the are though is that Fish House was a community with a post office, the first recorded even before Pennsauken was put on the books, according to Fichter author of "The Pennsauken Story" The project was built and paid for by New Jersey Transit. New Jersey Transit replaced an old two-story bird observatory that was vandalized and destroyed in a fire. The project was helped along by township, state environmental protection agency and Army Corps of Engineers officials. The Nature Walk at Fish House Cove begins on Cove Road, west of the railroad tracks, and winds its way over one of New Jersey's largest tidal marshland. It and ends at an observation deck overlooking Fish House Cove. "High tide is the best time to go you can see the skyline of the city and a nice view of the river." |
