Pennsauken Township Preparing For Joaquin
Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 10/01/2015 - 13:11While weather forecasts are indicating that Hurricane Joaquin is moving out to sea, Pennsauken Township continues to make preparations for severe weather, particularly as forecasts indicate heavy rains and strong winds on Friday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 3.
The Township's Public Works Department is working to remove leaves and debris from storm inlets to help prevent flooding. To help facilitate storm responses by emergency personnel, Public Works is dealing with tree branches that could potentially block roadways. Staff are on call and will be activated as needed during these storms.
Pennsauken's first responders, the Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission and the Pennsauken Sewerage Authority are also at a state of readiness and have personnel standing by in case the Township experiences severe weather conditions.
Pennsauken's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is monitoring weather forecasts closely. If necessary, the OEM will open its operations center this weekend and help coordinate the Township's storm response.
Residents can also prepare for the storm by doing the following:
- Clean your gutters of leaves and other debris
- Secure all lawn furniture, trash cans, and outside decoration
- Any other outdoor items that could possibly become airborne during the storm should be placed in a shed or taken inside
Also, please make sure your family has enough supplies to weather the storm. You should have enough water and non-perishable food supplies for at least three days. Insure you have enough of needed medication, working flashlights, extra batteries, an AM/FM portable radio and any other supplies specific to your family’s needs. If you have elderly neighbors, please check in to see if there’s anything you can do to help them prepare.
New Jersey's Office of Emergency Management offers tips to families to help them prepare for emergencies. You can find that information here.
As many residents have experienced power outages during severe storms in our area, the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management also offers tips on how to best deal with having the power go out. You can find that information by clicking here. To report power outages to PSE&G, call 1-800-436-PSEG (7734) immediately.
When the storm arrives, please continue to use 911 for all emergencies. Be sure to stay tuned to the local news for weather updates on Hurricane Joaquin.
By being prepared, you’re taking important steps that can keep you and your family safe.
